How to create a room design board
Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
If you’re like most people in the world, you’re a visual person. I always suggestion to clients that they find ways to visualize what they want before execute their vision. If you’re working with me, I’ll do all of this for you of course. However, if you’re doing it on your own, here’s a few tips and tricks on creating a design board (aka a mood board).
First, find your inspiration. Houzz is an excellent tool for this. It allows you to browse specific rooms, design types, colors, etc. Start saving the things you love to a board. You’ll need to create a free Houzz account.
Once you have your inspiration, it’s time to start visualizing YOUR room. The two software tools I primarily use to do this are Photoshop and Canva. Photoshop has everything (and more) that you need but it pricey. Canva offers all the tools you’ll need to create a design board, and even offers a free version with stripped down features. For these reasons, I recommend you use Canva to put your ideas down on paper.
Use your inspiration to start adding things to your design board that you love. Add in tile, add in textiles for curtains, countertops, anything that your room will need. I suggest you always start with one item, and work around it. Maybe it’s a chest of drawers from your grandmother, or a fabric print you picked up on your favorite trip. As you add your items, you’ll start to see how things work together (and how things don’t). When you get stuck, sleep on it and tackle it later with fresh eyes.
Little by little, you’ll see your design come to life! When you’re happy with you got, start sourcing your product and voila, a design you were able to visualize and therefore love!
Happy decorating!
